Meet the Makers at Motcomb Street

Throughout the month of May, we’ll be joining the London Cheese Project in celebrating London Cheese Month. Across the city, artisan producers and cheesemongers will be showcasing their finest produce at a series of tastings, talks and workshops.

We’ve invited five British cheesemakers, (and their cheeses), to join us in Motcomb St. to share their cheeses and their stories.

Meet the Maker: Julie Cheyney from White Wood Dairy

Thursday 16th May 2019, 10am-3pm

Julie Cheyney is the first cheesemaker to win the James Aldridge Award for Raw Milk Cheese twice. Come and meet Julie, and try her cheeses: St. Jude and St. Cera. Saintly by name, but wickedly good!

Meet the Maker: The Bath Soft Cheese Co. and Julianna Sedli from The Old Cheese Room

Friday 17th May 2019, 10am-3pm

In quite a treat for the turophile, we have not one, but two cheesemakers with us today. Sample cheeses including the likes of: Baronet, Wyfe of Bath, Bath Blue, The Merry Wyfe and Bath Soft.

Meet the Maker: Blackwoods Cheese Company

Saturday 18th May 2019, 10am-3pm

Makers of the sublime Edmund Tew, crowned ‘Supreme Champion’ at the Artisan Cheese Awards 2018. Come and meet the makers and try Edmund Tew, and Graceburn: Blackwoods’ take on a Persian Fetta.

Meet the Maker: Marcus Ferguson from Feltham's Farm

Saturday 25th May 2019, 10am-3pm

A renegade by name, and a renegade by nature. Marcus Fergusson is a relatively new cheesemaker, but his burgeoning trophy cabinet would make you believe otherwise. Come and try the notoriously punchy Renegade Monk and meet the maker!

The Fine Cheese Co. Belgravia is Officially a Great Friend to the Community

Our cheese shop on Motcomb Street was recently put forward for the New Friend category at the Belgravia Awards and we’re pleased to announce that our team won.

The Fine Cheese Co. Belgravia was awarded New Friend by celebrity chef, Marcus Wareing. This honour goes to a business that has relatively recently joined the Belgravia community and has impressed by immersing itself in the community.

We’re incredibly happy to have been picked as the winner of this great accolade and will be doing all we can to continue helping the local community of Belgravia, especially when it comes to the cheeses on their cheeseboards.

Red Wine Farmer a hit

Our cheeses also took centre stage on the night too as part of a small stall, with Red Wine Farmer being a huge favourite among attendees. No doubt its creamy back note and silky-smooth texture had a lot do with this cheese’s popularity.

The Belgravia Awards, organised by Belgravia Magazine, took place at the Jumeirah Carlton Tower on 17th January 2018 and celebrate the local community by recognising the efforts of people and companies that have made a positive contribution to local life.

Meet the Cheesemaker Returns for 2017 in our London Cheese Shop

After last year’s successful run of events, Meet the Cheesemaker is back and this time we’re running it exclusively at The Fine Cheese Co. Belgravia on 7th, 8th and 15th December.

For 2017, we have quite the special line-up too.  We’re pleased to announce that Fen Farm, makers of the silky-smooth Baron Bigod, Lyburn with its Old Winchester and Blackwoods, producer of Persian Feta, Graceburn, will be in our shop over the next couple of weeks.

Baron Bigod is a fabulously full-flavoured Brie-style cheese, hand-made on Fen Farm in Suffolk by Jonny Crickmore from the milk of his own herd of Montbeliarde cows. It’s a stunning brie-style cheese, with a rich, full, earthy flavour and a lingering finish.

Lyburn will be gracing our shop too, the day after Fen Farm, where you’ll be able to taste Old Winchester and hear about the efforts this cheesemaker goes to when making this great cheese.

Try an English Gouda in Belgravia

Old Winchester, based on a Gouda recipe, is a powerful, fruity cheese, with a full sweet flavour. It is matured for at least 16 months to develop a fabulous crystalline texture that crunches on the tongue.

From Blackwoods Cheese Company in Kent, Graceburn is a superbly soft and rich cheese, based on a Persian Feta recipe, and made by David Holton and Tim Jarvis.

Unlike traditional Feta, which is preserved in larger blocks, Graceburn is broken by hand into smaller pieces, and steeped in a blend of extra virgin olive oil and rapeseed oil, infused with thyme, garlic, bay and pepper.

You will be able to try all these cheeses and hear more about their wonderful dairy making on the dates below:

Fen Farm - 7th December
Lyburn 8th - December
Blackwoods - 15th December

You won’t want to miss this!

Glowing Praise for our Cheese Shops in Bath and London

Our shops are the heartbeat of The Fine Cheese Co. We so much effort into making them an enjoyably tasty experience for everybody who enters, that when we receive a glowing review it fills us with immense pride.

In the last week, we’ve had two instances of just this, which we cannot wait to tell you about. The first came in The Times’ Weekend supplement as part of a feature on cheese and wine.

Our Bath cheese shop and cafe was given pride of place in The Times’ top 15 cheese shops in the UK, ranked by the newspaper’s Food Editor, Tony Turnbull, who praised our support of the local cheesemakers.

“The shelves heave with fine cheeses including Westcombe, a cheddar from Somerset, awarded best cheddar at the 2017 British Cheese Awards.”

Best cheese shop in London

Then, our London cheese shop almost won its first award. Considering The Fine Cheese Co. Belgravia has only been open in Motcomb Street for a little more than a year, we think this is an incredible accomplishment.

At the recent World Cheese Awards, held by The Guild of Fine Food at the Tobacco Dock London, our Belgravia cheese shop narrowly missed out on the trophy for Le Gruyère AOP Cheese Counter of the Year.

With the award going to Pangbourne Cheese Shop, near Reading, that makes The Fine Cheese Co. Belgravia the best cheese shop in London.

New Mandarin Macarons, Just in Time for Halloween

Mandarin Macarons

Why have a trick, when you can have a treat for the coming Halloween season? We have introduced some extra-special macarons, flavoured with fresh mandarin juice.

Couple these new Mandarin Macarons with our classic Pistachio Macaron and you have the perfect spread of patisserie for a spooky Halloween or a flaming bonfire night.

Alternatively, if the ghouls come knocking, why not indulge your favourite fancy-dressed trick or treaters with an extravagant French delicacy. They are incredibly delicious, though, so you could be forgiven for not wanting to hand them out.

Our new Mandarin Macarons are available from our Bath and Belgravia shops right now. Pop along and try them, along with all of our other classic flavours, including coconut, chocolate, strawberry and passionfruit.

Cheese and Wine at Motcomb Street’s Grand Reopening

Join us on 27th September from 17-22.00 for what’s set to be a stunning event in the heart of Belgravia. It’s the grand reopening of Motcomb Street and the event is set to be an end-of-summer extravaganza!

Our London cheese shop will be open late into the evening. We will be offering an assortment of stunning cheese and wine pairings, featuring this year’s British Cheese Award winners, including Beauvale, Westcombe Cheddar and Supreme Champion, Pave Cobble.

Will be celebrating the start of every cheese lovers favourite time of year: Vacherin season. This cheese has such a rich, voluptuous texture and full fruity flavour that you’ll want to spoon it straight from the box, and we’re baking it especially for the reopening.

Once you’ve had your fill of cheese and wine, you might like to explore the edible installation by Bompas & Parr at the entrance to Motcomb Street (via Lowndes Street) and then dance the night away to music from jazz bands that will be played throughout the night.

Motcomb Street will be officially launched by Masterchef judge Marcus Wareing and Alexandra Dudley, Chef Patron of the local two-Michelin-starred restaurant Marcus.

We look forward to seeing you at this exciting evening!

Meet the Cheese-maker: La Baronia

Think you’ve tried Buffalo Mozzarella or Burrata? Think again!

We firmly believe that our La Baronia Buffalo Mozzarella and Burrata is unlike any you will have tasted before. There’s not a trace of acidity, but in its place, is a taste of great subtlety and delicacy with a gentle, creamy finish.

We’re so confident about this that we have invited La Baronia’s very own Giuseppe Cutillo into our shops on 7th and 8th June to chat about the Buffalo Mozzarella and Burrata he makes with his fair hands.

La Baronia embodies the purity and goodness of buffalo milk. Their fertile pasture is rich in wetland species, that gives the milk its delicate taste and unique aroma. The Cutillo family started La Baronia 30 years ago.

They began by researching the working methods of the buffalo dairymen, practices that had been handed down since the eighth Century, when buffalos first arrived in Campania.

Animal husbandry is everything to the family. To keep the buffalo happy and healthy in the hot Summer climate, the animals "swim" several times a day in large water tanks. How cool is that?

So, if you’re in Bath or London over the following days, please do stop by.

Cheese and Wine-tasting Events Arrive in Belgravia, London

Our London cheese shop, The Fine Cheese Co. Belgravia, will now be opening even later during the evening, exclusively for cheese and wine-tasting events. If you are looking for something different to do for a birthday, corporate function or other celebration, why not join us for a night to remember?

Events can be completely tailored to your tastes. So, whether you’re a fan of ewe or blue, we have you covered on the cheese front. Our private-hire tastings start at 20.00 and run until 21.30. Your very special evening will begin with a cocktail on arrival, which will be accompanied with canapés/charcuterie.

Our expert cheese-mongers will then begin an extensive sampling of four cheeses, based on your group’s specific requirements. Each cheese will be paired with one of our many great wines.

Of course, you’ll have the chance to take the cheese and wine home with you to friends and family. Everything you tried throughout the evening will be available to buy from our beautiful shop.

Private-hire tastings are available for a minimum of seven people and priced at £40 per person.
